“She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future”
This is Alicia Smith. This is a girl who walks through life with passion in her soul and love in her heart. She has this elegance and strength within her that makes her shine. Her compassion for the world around her is undeniable, and you see it by the kindness in her eyes and the bright smile that is always on her face. This is Alicia Smith.
The day we met Alicia was on one of those remarkably mild sunny “winter” days, that felt more like spring than winter. There was so much laughter and tears that it was as if we had been friends for a lifetime, not just a couple of hours. We all spoke candidly about life, families, friends and ourselves. The kind of conversations you reserve only for those you trust with your heart. Upon first impression we connected and knew instantly how lucky we were to have met and had this time with Alicia.
“Have you ever awakened from a restless night of sleep and just couldn’t do it – you couldn’t wear that mask another day, acting as though everything were “okay”. Could anyone possibly understand what you were going through? Or are you on the other side of that coin? Times are tough, though you know people have survived worse. But how do others overcome staggering mountains and valleys? What we wouldn’t give to absorb their wisdom.” an excerpt from the inspiring book, Common Stones, written by Alicia M. Smith.
This book, Common Stones, is a thought-provoking read about life, hope and love. Alicia shares the stories of five different individuals, as well as herself, as they each overcome mountains in their lives. The book is also about healing and triumph and the reminder that you are never alone, God has this and He has YOU. A quote from Common Stones, “no matter how well we map out our lives, there’s always a better plan, by Someone smarter. “For I know the plans I have for you’, says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope'” Jeremiah 29:11
Alicia’s book, Common Stones, is just as captivating as she is. Frankly, I couldn’t put it down once I started. Pick up a copy, you will be so glad you did!
The juggling act of life is sometimes more than we can bare. The good and the bad can come at a rate that takes our breath away. The strength that Alicia embodies is inspiring and admiring. She says, “I’m teaching myself to be patient”. The process that Alicia and her husband Ryan have gone through to have a family has indeed been strenuous. From suffering through infertility to losing babies amid adoption, this sweet family has definitely had their faith and patience tested. Last Fall, many prayers were answered when Alicia and Ryan got the call about adopting their precious baby boy. This little blue bundle, Jayden, has brought so much joy and happiness into their lives. “I prayed for this child and the Lord has granted me what I have asked of him.” 1 Samuel 1:27
This cute momma says, “Jayden is extraordinary to us, especially with his ears.” This darling baby has significant hearing loss, but he couldn’t have been blessed with better parents to take care of him than this couple. With a smile on her face, Alicia talked with positivity and grace as she described the care, therapy and treatment for Jayden. As we found her to be incredible, Alicia’s strength and tenacity inspired us as well.
As Alicia provided a platform for the voices in her book, Common Stones, to share their stories, those individuals in return inspired her to keep writing. “I’m supposed to write…I would never have guessed it”, she says. An enormous inspiration behind this book was Alicia’s beloved father, who sadly passed away from a horrible cancer in 2007. As she deeply grieved, this book forced her to write and heal through her writing. Truly “finding calm in the chaos and meeting adversity in all things”, well said smart lady!
Our faith rescues us when we are drowning, and it forces us to get up and start a new day. During the season of excitement of being blessed with Jayden, Alicia suffered another deep loss. Her mother passed away when her baby was only 10 weeks old. There aren’t words to describe this period of time. Alicia expressed how hard it has been to enjoy her new baby while grieving her mother who she loved so dearly. “My faith pulls me out of those trenches”, and as she calls out to God, tears and all, He meets her right where she is. Alicia says she isn’t afraid to talk to God and her mom. When the pain is too great, Alicia spoke of this and I have done this myself, just call out to God and ask for help. He is there waiting patiently for us.
“Joy is prayer, joy is strength, joy is love, joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls”, Mother Teresa once said. You cannot help but see the joy in Alicia’s heart. The love she has for God, her husband, her son, her sisters and family, friends and the other dear people in her life. Alicia wants to reach people and let them know that they are not alone. Whether it is through her book, motherhood or simply just sitting down grabbing a coffee, Alicia has empathy for others. She walks with dignity and grace amidst whatever life has thrown at her. This is Alicia Smith, and we are so grateful for her!
One the last page of Common Stones, Alicia wrote this…“At this moment, recognize the strength in your steps. You are stronger than you ever imagined.” You are as well dear friend….
