In the unique neighborhood of Berry Hill, there is a talented song bird who co-owns a studio called “Write Off the Row”. Liz Downing, as she is known in the music world, or Elizabeth Wanczak, as she is known to her family and friends is a creative artist making her dreams come true. This compassionate, intelligent and driven Texan knows who she is and isn’t afraid to fight for it.
Elizabeth has been in the music industry most of her life. She started taking piano lessons at age 3 and began singing professionally at age 6. Laughing, she said with her boom box blaring music and holding tight to a microphone, she loved performing for her family when she was little. At age 12, Elizabeth sang with Celine Dion through the Houston Children’s Chorus at Warner Music Christian Division. In middle school, she had this amazing experience, where she traveled all over Europe singing through a program called People to People Student Ambassador. On this incredible trip, Elizabeth had the privilege to perform for the pope at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. In 2005, she moved to Tennessee to attend college at Sewanee and continue pursuing her singing dreams. Elizabeth wore the road out traveling back and forth from Sewanee to Nashville for vocal lessons during college. Constantly perfecting her talent. A wise mentor advised Elizabeth to always have a back-up plan, so after graduating from college with a degree in political science, Elizabeth found a job working as a paralegal at a law firm in Nashville. This was a great stepping stone in which she learned a lot about running a business. In 2008, Elizabeth started recording and writing at Vibe Studios and released an album in 2011. In the summer of 2013, a long-awaited dream came true. She started her recording studio, “Write Off the Row” with her business partner. It is amazing how things come together. This hard-working artist hasn’t stopped or slowed down yet. In her words, “I don’t know how not to work”. It’s interesting, when you are following your heart and your passions, I think what would appear as work becomes so much more than that. It is a part of your heart and soul, and a part of your identity. The amazing Walt Disney once said, “all our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them”.
There are so many facets to what makes Elizabeth who she is today, and one of those is her family. Her parents have encouraged Elizabeth her entire life, and in return she has learned invaluable life lessons from them. From special family vacations to everyday life, this family put love first. As a wife and mom, these are characteristics that she wants for her own family. Find value in who you are and not the world around you, and being true to yourself is very important to her. Elizabeth’s favorite quote is from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “to thine own self be true”. It’s beautiful and inspiring to the soul. It is what we want our children to understand and believe in.
Two special people in Elizabeth’s life who have inspired her to dig deeper and reach farther are her parents. Individually their impact on her life has shown Elizabeth to always aim higher. The relationship she has with her father is a special bond that any girl would be lucky to have. His love for history, cooking and reading connects their souls and minds tightly together. Also, his love for their family, specifically Elizabeth’s mother. This graceful, intelligent lady has been a source of who Elizabeth aspires to be, not just as a person but also as a mother in her own family. Besides providing lots of care and love to her as a little girl, her mother also showed Elizabeth the world of education and the importance of how learning can enrich your mind and heart. Sadly, Elizabeth’s mother was diagnosed at a very young age with Parkinson’s. She has lived with this for 20 years and in the past 2 years been diagnosed with Lewy Body Demensia. It is a horrible disease that has robbed her mother of her life even more. The Lewy Body Demensia Association (LBDA) is a nonprofit that is near and dear to Elizabeth’s heart. You can go to the LBDA website www.lbda.org to find out more information and how to get involved.
Today, Elizabeth is currently working on a project with a guitarist writing children’s music. She wants to produce something that is authentic and clean and pure. Perfect material for sharing with children and families. This talented girl has the business savvy and smarts to turn whatever she touches into gold. Elizabeth’s passion for her career, her family and her life inspire the world around her.
